The Wyrir

The wyrir are one of the native species of Suiran. Family oriented and docile, the wyrir are natural gentle giants. While capable of summoning flame, they are more likely to bring warmth than to burn.

Biology

The wyrir are large, stocky, and strong. They have relatively small heads with uniquely flat faces and a long, curved horn on their foreheads. Their large, rounded ears are highly sensitive to sound, although they have a relatively weak sense of smell. They boast massive, fluffy manes and short tails to match. Their muscular legs are incredibly powerful and can fell a tree with a single kick. Their cloven hooves allow them impressive traction on steep or rocky surfaces.

Abilities

Pyrokinesis

The wyrir are capable of instinctively summoning and controlling fire. Unlike normal spellcasting, a wyrir will be able to summon their fire, at least to some extent, no matter how much magic they have. Their flames naturally spawn from their mane and tail but can extend to the rest of their bodies if willed. They are immune to fire and smoke inhalation but are still affected by natural heat.

Ecology and Behavior

Reproduction and Life Cycle

Wyrir have holder-giver reproduction with holders giving birth to live young. Holders are pregnant for nine months and will typically only give birth to a single calf.

  • Wyrir are fertile for a very short period of time in Autumn, typically going into heat for less than a week. As most wyrir live in matriarchal clans, sex for reproduction is a right typically limited to the lead matriarch. Most wyrir have little interest in sex outside of their heat.
  • After nine months of development, calves are typically born in the spring. Calves are able to walk within half an hour after birth and can run within a few days. Calves are heavily dependent on their dam and are reliant on their milk until six months old. While far more physically developed than other intalli in their first few months of life, young wyrir follow very basal instincts.
  • Calves are highly valued by clans, with immense care being put in to ensure their safety. Each and every member of the clan is tasked with keeping an eye on and teaching calves various skills important to aiding the clan. Calves are expected to participate in many of the tasks and chores around the clan and gain more responsibilities as they grow up.
  • Once a calf hits adulthood, they will decide to stay in their native clan or to disperse to a new one. The vast majority of wyrir that disperse are givers rather than holders.
  • Wyrir are considered adults at 20 years old. While their life expectancy sits at 160, their lifespan peaks at 200.

    Social Structure

  • The majority of wyrir live in pseudo-eusocial clans made up of one leading matriarch, non-breeding laborers, and the matriarch's giver companions. The vast majority of laborers are made up of the matriarch's children or other kin but may also include unrelated recruits. Only the matriarch is permitted to breed. Some matriarchs may have a dedicated group of companions to breed with or may exclusively breed with wyrir outside the clan.
  • There is a wide variety of clan structures, with some possessing multiple matriarchs, some shuffling the role of matriarch between random laborers, and some simply having lax breeding rules. The largest clans are run by multiple matriarchs (Who are often relatives, lovers, or simply business partners.)
  • The majority of clans max out at 50 members and typically sit around 20-30. It is common for clans to split once they've become too large for a matriarch to manage.
  • Diet

Wyrir are herbivorous and consume many different types of vegetation. The majority of their diet is made up by forbs, tree shoots, and most notably, grains. The wyrir are strongly focused on agriculture and are reliant on many different types of grains and vegetables. Unique to Suiran, the wyrir have cultured a vast array of various pyrophyte plants which rely on fire for germination and regrowth.

Baking is very popular among wyrir and most wyrir are able to bake a vast array of breads, cakes, and pastries.

    Hybrids

Due to their unique and powerful magic, successful wyrir hybridization is extremely rare. High rates of miscarriage, stillbirth, and neonatal mortality have made it so that only the luckiest of wyrir hybrids survive infancy. Even for those that do survive, things don't get much easier. Most hybrids have poor control over their fire. The luckiest are incapable of creating fire, but most are forced to deal with immense fire that their bodies are simply unable to handle. The few wyrir hybrids that do reach maturity are utterly sterile.
