The Ortio

The ortio are one of the native species of Yeilvai. Knowledgeable and observant, the ortio are natural scholars. The realm of dreams and nightmares is where the ortio thrive- making them just as active while asleep as they are when awake.

Biology

The ortio are a short and stout species. They possess an extremely thick and fluffy mane and tail. They have two sets of sensitive ears. They have large eyes with horizontal pupils. When grown out, their manes can entirely cover their neck and chest. They can naturally take on both bipedal and quadrapedal stances.

Abilities

Dream Weaving

The ortio are able to visit the dreams of others they are in close proximity to. They are able to partially influence these dreams by changing the emotions and feelings experienced in the dream rather than specifically what is occurring. When an ortio has awoken from another person's dream, their wool will take on a strange colorful form. When touched, this wool will elicit the same feelings and thoughts that the dreamer was experiencing.

This wool is often woven into various garments. When left alone, the wool on an ortio will lose its emotional effects after a day or two.

Ecology and Behavior

Reproduction and Life Cycle

Ortio possess a holder-giver reproduction system with holders becoming pregnant and giving birth to live young.

  • Ortio can reproduce during a very short window in the spring, with most children being produced from previously established relationships. Pregnancies last for five months and almost always result in twins. Pregnancies with less than or more than two fetuses can be extremely dangerous for all parties involved.
  • Ortio are underdeveloped at birth and take 2 to 4 months to begin standing and several more to begin walking. Ortio solely rely on milk for their first year but may begin eating solid food afterwards.
  • Throughout early childhood, ortio require the constant presence of their twin. Separation can cause intense mental and physical distress, no matter the situation. They may only begin to become independent from one another after they've reached 6-8 years old.
  • Ortio are physically mature and are considered adults at 18. Their lifespan sits around 130 years old with average life expectancy ranging between 90-100 years.

    Diet

Ortio are omnivorous, with shrubs, grasses, and legumes making up the majority of their diet. Small prey such as small rodents and birds are caught opportunistically.

    Hybrids

Ortio hybrids are not uncommon, however it is rare for a hybrid to come from an ortio holder. Hybrid holders themselves face major fertility issues. Dream walking is difficult to achieve for most hybrids.
